Abstract   

This IDC Presentation analyzes the 2008 U.S. Consumer Panel Broadband Survey, which explores broadband subscribers' attitudes toward and usage of broadband services and technologies. This document, delivered as a PowerPoint presentation, is based on primary research of approximately 1,030 U.S. households. The document includes an assessment of consumer broadband and technology usage trends, broadband provider selection and satisfaction, broadband provider loyalty and switching behavior, and consumer interest in and usage of Internet applications. Key findings include:

  • Survey results mirror current market deployments by access method — cable modems lead, but the telcos are catching up with DSL and fiber.
  • The majority of respondents are longtime broadband subscribers, with four-fifths having had broadband for more than three years.
  • More consumers are subscribing to a faster-speed service, although one-fifth do not know the speed of their connection.
  • Most respondents are satisfied with their current provider; however, a minority are less than satisfied, with cost the primary reason for dissatisfaction.
  • Competitive churn is on the rise as two-fifths of respondents reported switching providers in 2008, compared with one-third in 2007.
  • However, a majority of respondents do not intend to switch providers in the coming year — intent to churn has declined from 29% in 2006 to 13% in 2008.
  • Bundling is gaining ground as a driver of provider choice and churn, although it ranked a distant third with churn intenders.
  • Speed is no longer king — speed and price ranked equally important as the primary reason switchers churned providers this year.
