Abstract

This IDC study presents 1H09 broadband subscriber results for the leading U.S. service providers across the cable and telco segments. For the purposes of this study, broadband services are defined as DSL, cable modem, and other broadband, which includes Verizon's fiber-based FiOS service and AT&T's reported broadband connections, which include DSL lines, U-verse high-speed Internet access, and satellite broadband. This study also provides IDC's estimation of industry metrics, trends, and service provider rankings.

This IDC study presents 1H09 broadband subscriber results for the leading U.S. service providers across the cable and telco segments.

"Cable modems still dominate the U.S. broadband services market with a lead of nearly 5 million subscribers over their telco rivals," said Amy Harris, research manager with IDC's Consumer Broadband and Mobile Services program. "But the telcos won a decisive victory in the ongoing battle between the telcos and cable MSOs in 2Q09, making this the worst quarter ever for cable operators in terms of new subscriber additions since we began tracking the market in 1999."
