Abstract

This IDC study provides IDC's top 10 predictions for the system infrastructure software market for 2012 and how the convergence of virtualization, cloud, automation, analytics, and the consumerization of IT are setting the stage for major industry shifts and challenges to the conventional wisdom.

"The system infrastructure software market is both adapting to address virtualization and cloud and, at the same time, being changed by cloud, consumerization of IT, and industry convergence," said Al Gillen, program vice president, System Software, at IDC. "If you step back, the broad trend we see is system infrastructure software is adapting to environments where deployments are increasingly homogeneous and increasingly self-managed and self-provisioned. If that sounds like cloud computing, it's because for cloud computing to be consumable by the typical enterprise, the evolution of system infrastructure software has to happen first."
