Abstract

This IDC study presents IDC's annual list of the top 10 HPC market predictions for 2012.

"In 2011, the HPC market recovery from the worldwide economic recession that began in 2008 continued, enabling HPC server revenue essentially to match the 2007 pre-recession level. IDC expects that growth in 2012 will be 8–9% over 2011. The ongoing recovery is occurring in the midst of major developments in motion within the HPC market, especially the growing penetration of standards-based clusters; the high-end race to build petascale systems and prepare for exascale computing; an expected surge in data-intensive computing (Big Data); the challenge of highly parallel programming; rising costs of power, cooling, and software; early competition from new alternative (non-x86) processor technologies; and an array of storage and data management challenges." — Earl C. Joseph, program vice president, Technical Computing
