This IDC update highlights significant events in the personal computer (PC) market in May 2012. We present information from Worldwide Display, Graphics, and Touchscreen Interfaces and Technologies Embedded in PCs 2012–2016 Forecast (IDC #234616, May 2012). The display market has been mostly flat for the past 10 years, but the interfaces that will be put in new PCs are anything but "business as usual." Some longtime industry-standard interfaces (like VGA) will be replaced by new and technically advanced interfaces (like DisplayPort), but nearly all current graphics interfaces will see some change in adoption during this forecast period. We present highlights from Worldwide Networking and Connectivity Interfaces and Technologies Embedded in PCs 2012–2016 Forecast (IDC #234728, May 2012). As the number of connected devices grows (on whether the absolute or the per-person scale), the interfaces used to connect these devices also grow. Products built for the new 802.11ac connection specification will replace current 802.11n products more quickly than many realize. We close this section with information from Worldwide Communications, Multimedia, and Security Interfaces and Technologies Embedded in PCs 2012–2016 Forecast (IDC #234850, May 2012). The security of connected computing devices is becoming a major issue for many commercial PC buyers as IT struggles to adopt coherent and secure BYOD rules, and the interfaces needed to resolve this and similar issues will change over the near future. We also present highlights of new product releases and announcements, noting a new high-end all-in-one (AIO) desktop PC, an Ultrabook-class notebook PC that uses carbon fiber for light weight and rigidity, and a tiny desktop PC no wider than a golf ball.
