Abstract

This IDC study provides a framework highlighting the relationship between traditional and cloud services. Customers in today's world have an array of services from which to choose. When we look at the options available to them through the lens of traditional services, services in which there is a considerable labor component, customer options extend from professional services (e.g., consulting integration) to support (e.g., software, hardware) to outsourcing (e.g., hosting infrastructure services, application management, BPO). The addition of cloud services has expanded customer options. The question, though, that many customers and suppliers are asking is: Where do cloud services fit or not fit into the traditional set of services? It is with this basic question that IDC's Worldwide Services group has developed a market framework that assesses and defines the relationship between traditional and cloud services across the full breadth of 15 services markets.

"Navigating across a world of services that has expanded from options using a traditional means of delivery to newer options referred to as cloud services has become increasingly complex and resulted in customers roaming what seem like a maze of aisles and shelves stacked with services offerings that on one hand seem like identical twins and yet on another seem to have no resemblance at all," said David Tapper, VP, Outsourcing and Offshore Services, and Marianne Kolding, VP of European Services at IDC. "Success for both services and technology firms in this new world requires that they not only develop a framework that clearly states how these two worlds interact and align but also use this framework to help customers migrate as seamlessly as possible and enable vendors themselves to build more integrated organizations that they will need in developing the right brands, optimizing investments, constructing effective road maps that enable transformation of both customers and vendors themselves, and creating a financial plan that supports a smooth transition to the world of cloud services."
