This IDC study examines the IDC file-based storage (FBS) landscape from the lens of a namespace. The changing consumption patterns of file-based storage driven by social, mobile, cloud, and big data are forcing a fundamental shift in file-based storage solutions. Storage vendors are retooling these solutions to handle structured, unstructured, and semistructured data sprawl. File-based solutions are becoming object aware, allowing data access via newer interfaces such as HTTP/REST and gaining data management capabilities that were not found in their predecessors. "It is hard to imagine a future for file-based storage solutions without federated namespace functionality that provides asset-independent referral, transparent data mobility, and seamless data management," says Ashish Nadkarni, research director, Storage Systems, IDC.
