Abstract

This IDC study reviews the growth of the Linux client operating environment and Linux server operating environment market during 2011 and provides a shipment and installed base forecast through 2016.

"Linux has clearly established itself as a competitive player in the enterprise datacenter market and as a foundation for shared public cloud infrastructure. Bridging from the datacenters to the cloud world is where the Linux vendors are investing today, and rightfully so," said Al Gillen, program VP, System Software at IDC. "Moving forward, we can expect to see investment taking place surrounding the Linux operating system as cloud system software — the software that allows customers to build a true private cloud using Linux — comes of age."
