This IDC study provides 2008–2011 revenue share data for the worldwide public platform-as-a-service (PaaS) market. The worldwide PaaS market grew by 41.8% in 2011. Market leadership was clustered in the hands of a few vendors including GXS, salesforce.com, Amazon.com, IBM, Compuware, Google, and ESRI. This heterogeneous mix of vendors speaks to the many different business models that make the cloud appealing. Integration (GXS, IBM, and Compuware), platform services (salesforce.com and Amazon), and spatial information management (Google and ESRI) are currently the leading application development and deployment use cases in public PaaS.
Given the strength of revenue growth across all of the six public PaaS segments and primary geographic region as well as the expected general availability of platforms from Red Hat, VMware, and IBM in late 2012 or 1H13, the outlook for 2012 and beyond is for sustained high growth.
"The worldwide public PaaS market is proving to be a success on virtually every level," said Stephen D. Hendrick, group vice president for Application Development and Deployment research. "Each of the six segments currently tracked by IDC — integration, other platform, database, application platform, testing, and business process management — exhibited outstanding growth in 2011."
