This IDC Forecast Update forecasts and analyzes the worldwide tablet market by region. It updates and supersedes Worldwide and U.S. Tablet 2012–2016 Forecast Update: September 2012 (IDC #237222, October 2012). It includes shipment, revenue, and ASP data for the 2012–2016 forecast period, as well as segmentation by consumer versus commercial adoption, WiFi-only versus 3G/4G support, and operating system (OS).
Tablets continue to capture mindshare among consumers, and we expect to see record shipment numbers in the second half of 2012. New products from Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple should give consumers a wealth of tablet options from which to choose during the 2012 holiday season.
This study is based on IDC's extensive primary and secondary research and includes actual 3Q12 tablet shipment data for the United States, Western Europe, Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), Japan, and the rest of the world. IDC analysts compile these numbers by tracking quarterly shipments in more than 40 countries worldwide. Forecast data is current as of December 2012.
IDC continues to see robust demand for tablets in the worldwide market, and as a result, we've once again increased our worldwide forecast to reflect this reality. Attractive new devices from Apple, Samsung, Amazon, ASUS, and others lead us to believe 4Q12 will represent the biggest quarter to date for tablets and a great jumping off point for continued robust growth in 2013 and beyond.
