Abstract

This IDC study presents IDC's prognostications in the year ahead and analyzes various major segments of the consumer market, including mobile phones, tablets, and PCs.

"Many in the technology industry have shifted their attention from making money on the hardware to making money on the software and services served to the consumer on that hardware," said Tom Mainelli, IDC's research director for Tablets. "However, hardware remains a very important part of the equation, and vendors that take their eyes off the ball here will find themselves unable to compete down the road. As a result, we expect competition for hardware market share to continue to be fierce and unrelenting across the phone, tablet, and PC categories. Such competition is always good for the consumer, and we expect 2013 to shape up to be a very good year for technology buyers."
