This IDC study forecasts and analyzes the worldwide ereader market by region. It supersedes Worldwide and U.S. eReader 2012–2016 Forecast Update: December 2012 (IDC #238740, December 2012). It includes shipment, revenue, and ASP data for the 2013–2017 forecast period as well as segmentation by consumer versus commercial adoption, WiFi-only versus 3G/4G support, and operating system. eReaders, as exemplified by the Amazon Kindle, are slate form factor devices with epaper displays that are used to display consumer ebooks and periodicals.
"For the ereader market, 2012 was a disastrous year in terms of total worldwide shipments," said Tom Mainelli, IDC's research director for Tablets. "Despite some very good eink-based products, including new front-lit models from first Barnes & Noble and then Amazon, it's clear that most consumers are choosing tablets over ereaders in mature markets such as the United States. While we expect modest growth to return to the market this year as ebooks spread to more regions, we expect the ereader market to begin to wane in earnest beginning in 2015."
