This IDC study presents the U.S. smartphone market for 2013–2017. Vendors will ship a total of 137.5 million smartphones into the United States in 2013, up 14.5% from the 120.1 million units shipped in 2012. Smartphones will account for 76.8% of all mobile phone shipments in 2013, up from 68.7% in 2012. By 2017, total U.S. smartphone shipments will reach 183.0 million units and will account for 96.5% of all mobile phone shipments at a CAGR of 8.8% for 2012–2017.
"The U.S. smartphone market is heading for certain growth," says Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phones team. "In 2011, smartphones accounted for the majority of all mobile phone shipments in the United States. In 2012, smartphone users accounted for the majority of all mobile phone users in the United States. We anticipate slower growth of smartphones as these devices hold the pride of place among OEMs, carriers and, most importantly, end users. This will provide users with many devices and experiences from which to choose but also puts the pressure on the market to differentiate in an increasingly crowded market."
