This IDC study forecasts and analyzes the worldwide ereader market by region. It supersedes Worldwide eReader 2013–2017 Forecast (IDC #240503, April 2013). It includes shipment, revenue, and ASP data for the 2013–2017 forecast period as well as segmentation by consumer versus commercial adoption, WiFi-only versus 3G/4G support, and operating system. eReaders, as exemplified by the Amazon Kindle, are slate form factor devices with epaper displays that are used to display consumer ebooks and periodicals.
"For the ereader market, 2013 has started almost as poorly as 2012 ended," said Tom Mainelli, IDC's research director for Tablets. "The battle for consumers' dollars is over, and the tablet has displaced the purpose-built ereader for the vast majority of buyers. eReaders will continue to exist, and for some, they're an ideal product, but growth in the market is over, and we expect shipment declines to persist throughout our forecast period."
