This IDC study describes hiring and general development strategies for IT job roles that consider the roles' current and future importance to the enterprise. By using survey data from 130 CIOs on the relative importance of 17 job roles in four major categories — covering applications, infrastructure, technical support, and general IT management — this study illustrates that groups of job roles have characteristics that require different treatment. CIOs and hiring managers can use this information as a baseline plan to help systematically, and conscientiously, transition their workforce from a 2nd platform– to a 3rd platform–ready enterprise.
"IT staffing strategies cannot be homogenous. CIOs and IT managers must develop strategies that appropriately consider both the internal importance of particular roles and the availability of external talent." — Cushing Anderson, vice president, IT Education and Certification
