This IDC Presentation examines the storage market that spans traditional external storage systems as well as the use of software-defined storage, flash for accelerated performance, and reduced latency and cloud services.
In 2014, storage industry disruption came from new overseas suppliers, open source software combined with industry standard servers (server-based storage), shifting revenue sources, and new application architectures. For incumbent storage suppliers, this disruption creates both challenges and opportunities.
For these traditional storage vendors, they must at once maintain their 2nd Platform customer base and portfolio while in parallel develop 3rd Platform strategies. Not all suppliers will make this transition. Those that do will be diligent in cutting away legacy product lines with lower margins and higher R&D investments. In addition, suppliers will need to embrace new business models and support a larger ecosystem while facing shifts in revenue and profit contributions.
