This IDC study provides our top 10 predictions for the worldwide imaging, printing, and document solutions (IPDS) market for 2015. As highlighted in IDC's recently published top 10 2015 predictions for the ICT industry (see IDC Predictions 2015: Accelerating Innovation — and Growth — on the 3rd Platform, IDC #252700, December 2014), the broader IT industry is in a critical period of innovation and value creation as transformational factors in the 3rd Platform continue to reshape all technology markets. We anticipate that the 3rd Platform will serve as the foundation for innovation in just about every industry with new offerings, new business models, and new cost structures to drive revenue growth and expand value. The potential for disruption to traditional market leaders is evident as the 3rd Platform is not just a technology innovation platform but fast becoming a business innovation platform as well.
With this broader perspective in mind, our imaging, printing, and documents solutions predictions take on themes that extend beyond the traditional print business model. We see new opportunities being created in document-related services, solutions, and vertical markets as well as evolving hardware opportunities with ink in the office, 3D printing, and digital signage. We also anticipate transformational changes for established markets like production and wide format printing.
"The IPDS market will continue to thrive in 2015, but with obvious market transformation fueled by the 3rd Platform. Document solutions, headed by managed print and document services as well as software offerings for 'smart' MFPs, will continue to drive growth opportunities in the coming year. In addition, we see evolving opportunities still being created within office, production, and wide format printing that warrant attention," says Keith Kmetz, vice president of IDC's Hardcopy Peripherals Solutions and Services programs.
