This IDC Presentation contains a summary overview of IDC's Worldwide Software-Defined Infrastructure Taxonomy, 2015 (IDC #255612, April 2015). Software-defined infrastructure (SDI) represents an ongoing industry trend toward the homogenization of datacenter hardware resources and a shift in value away from customized hardware platforms toward software control, orchestration, and service delivery solutions. SDI solutions are autonomous and operate independent of any hardware-specific dependencies and are programmatically extensible.
The more detailed taxonomy document is available as part of IDC's recently launched Special Study: Software-Defined Infrastructure 2015: State of the Market and Future Outlook. The Special Study will publish three additional reports throughout 2015 covering the results of planned SDI customer executive interviews, a United States–based survey of enterprise and service provider SDI buyers, and a worldwide forecast.
