This IDC study provides a detailed description of IDC's storage software market taxonomy. The taxonomy is made up of six functional markets grouped within the secondary market segment called storage software. Revenue is segmented across these functional markets as well as three geographic regions and five operating environments.
"IDC's storage software taxonomy represents a collectively exhaustive and mutually exclusive view of the worldwide storage software marketplace. Readers of this 2015 taxonomy should note that we have introduced the term 'software-defined storage controller software' to better reflect how this market fits within the rapidly changing storage ecosystem. The core definition and products within this functional market remain unchanged and include revenue for commercially available file, block, object, and hyperconverged software-defined storage products," said Eric Sheppard, research director, IDC's Storage program.
