This IDC study is the first document in which IDC has included a forecast for license, maintenance, and subscription revenue. Customer preference for license type varies by software type, and an overall software market picture does not always capture these nuances. However, the big picture perspective in this study is designed to help the reader understand the rate and magnitude of major industry shifts.
"The trend toward subscription revenue continues to be a dominant force in the software industry," said Amy Konary, research vice president for Software Licensing and Pricing with IDC. "At some point, growth rates for subscriptions will slow and the decline in license will flatten out. However, with a pent-up demand for subscription-based offerings as well as a keen focus in growing subscription revenue from all of the major players, these events will not occur within the forecast period in this study."
