This IDC study describes the key drivers of SMB IT and business decision makers as they acquire and deploy advanced technology resources in the changing competitive environment. IDC's 10 predictions for the SMB market are presented to provide guidance to technology providers about overall market direction and the forces that will influence the extent and nature of new technology deployment. Predictions are made from the perspective of near term (within the next 12 months), medium term (in 12-24 months), and longer term (in 24 months or more). The drivers behind different SMB predictions are identified along with IT impact and guidance. The study concludes with a summary of essential guidance.

Boggs noted that many of IDC's SMB predictions are related to the changing ways that technology is being used by companies worldwide. Chris Chute, VP, SMB Cloud and Mobility research, at IDC, said that the growing use of mobile and cloud resources is changing the levels of productivity that SMBs are achieving. Chute says, "As we look at the next generation of SMB workers, the millennials, and how they are working, it is clear that the next five years will see these firms reach new levels of efficiency and effectiveness, tilting an already leveling competitive playing field from large enterprises toward SMB advantage."
