Abstract

This IDC study presents our understanding of the white phone, or unlicensed and unbranded mobile phone, market and dynamics from a worldwide and regional perspective. It defines the white phone, outlines its market size, explains IDC's tracking methodology, and discusses the historical development of the white phone market. IDC believes affordable smartphone turnkey solutions from chipmakers MediaTek and Qualcomm will introduce a wave of white smartphone shipments in the People's Republic of China (PRC) and overseas markets, which is similar with what happened during the feature phone era.

"The white phone segment is not ready to ride away into the sunset, as affordable smartphone turnkey solutions allow players to offer smartphones. However, changed industry dynamics mean white smartphone shipments are unlikely to reach the shipment scale achieved by its feature phone brethren," says Wong Teck Zhung, senior market analyst, Client Devices, IDC Asia/Pacific.
