Abstract

This IDC Survey includes insights from decision-makers' perspectives regarding the use of shared services, issues faced while using shared services, and ways shared services are used for business automation. Shared services refer to a business model in which common support functions, such as HR, finance, IT, and procurement, are centralized and provided as shared resources to multiple departments or business units within an organization. Instead of each department having its own dedicated support staff and resources, shared services consolidate these functions into centralized service centers. This approach aims to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and standardize processes across the organization by leveraging economies of scale and specialized expertise.

This document delves into the challenges and opportunities surrounding shared services efficiency and employees' perspectives on how automation can optimize shared services. Answers to key questions include:

  • What type of shared services that organizations in Asia/Pacific are using?
  • What are the major challenges/concerns faced by organizations while using shared services?
  • What are the benefits of shared services for employees?
  • How generative AI (GenAI) can be used for optimizing shared services?

The insights are based on IDC's EX Shared Services Survey, 2023 (n = 400).
