Abstract

This IDC Flash provides an analysis of Optus' announcement of its 4G service launch and network upgrade, and highlights the current 4G landscape in Australia. Optus has deployed 4G frequency division duplex (FDD) LTE in Sydney and Perth and it has started offering 4G services to business users. The company also gave an update on its 3G/high-speed packet access (HSPA) network upgrade as well as its 4G time division duplex (TDD)-long term evolution (LTE) trial. Telstra has gained a head start in 4G by launching commercial services about 10 months before Optus, and the operator is experiencing healthy service uptake. Optus' move is crucial to ensure that it has a competing offer, particularly for business users, which are looking for better performance.
