The focus of this Market Insight is the transformation of the market for communications solutions within the SME segment in the coming five years. This transformation is driven by the fusion of communications and IT to form ICT and the uptake of the resultant solutions among SMEs. As the SME market is unique in each country, we will focus on the changes that are taking place in the UK market only.
The SME market falls in between the consumer or residential and the large corporate or multinational company categories. SMEs are defined as having fewer than 250 employees, and according to the Department for Business, Innovation, and Skills there are 5,243,525 businesses in the UK, of which 5,236,390 are SMEs, and can be found in all market sectors and geographic regions of the country.
Vendors supply communications services to the SME market through a mix of both direct and indirect sales channels, and because there are so many SMEs, indirect channels — through resellers or other solution providers — play an important role. The transformational change taking place in the ICT market overall will have as much of an impact on the supply side as it will on SMEs themselves.
This document considers how SME communications requirements are changing, and how the UK communications market is transforming today and will continue to do so over the next five years.
