This IDC study aims to provide a practical definition for digital transformation in Europe and presents a number of industry-specific use cases. As this is our first attempt to describe digital transformation with a level of detail that will enable us to size and forecast the market, it should be considered a work in progress. It defines digital transformation as the application of 3rd Platform–related technologies to fundamentally change the way something is done, generally with a design-led approach to business process redesign.
"We have chosen the narrow definition to track how the forefront of the transformational market using digital technologies develops. This way the market size will not be huge, but we expect growth to be high," said Mette Ahorlu, research director, IDC European Services. "Of course, the definitions will need adjustments as the market undergoes changes. We have therefore included a lot of examples of digital transformation in Europe to provide a clearer picture. Over time, these will become more advanced and be replaced. This study is a work in progress, and its value lies in ensuring that we are all on the same page when discussing the much hyped concept of digital transformation."
