This IDC study highlights IDC's annual European Enterprise Services Survey of more than 700 companies in seven countries/regions, seven industries, and four company size categories, looking at attitudes to application outsourcing. The 2012 findings demonstrate a good percentage of organizations plan to outsource their application environments for the first time, while nearly half of those that are already outsourcing plan to do more in the coming year. After IT security, application consolidation/modernization and the implementation of new software applications are the top priorities driving IT investment, so it is little surprise that CIOs are seeking external expertise to aid in this effort.
"This year offers vendors opportunities to upsell additional application services to their existing customers and to many organizations that plan to outsource for the first time. The application environment is a high priority for CIOs, and this will drive demand for external assistance," said Marianne Kolding, research VP, IDC European Services. "Our 2011 European Services Survey demonstrates that customers of application outsourcing services acknowledge that their vendors have helped them achieve many of their aims such as cost reduction and improvement in internal processes. However, the likelihood of European organizations switching outsourcing vendors has also increased, so this is not a time for vendors to rest on their laurels but rather secure customer retention through demonstrating how they can help innovate the business, including assisting in the customer's critical cloud journey."
