This IDC Energy Insights Perspective looks at in-memory analytics and how two enterprise software heavyweights, Oracle and SAP, are addressing this technology for utilities. SAP has made its HANA technology central to its entire product strategy, while Oracle has responded in kind, but with quite a different strategy, very recently with the formal announcement of its Database 12c In-Memory option. Other vendors — including Aerospike, Altibase, DataStax, eXtremeDB, HP, IBM, memSQL, Microsoft, MongoDB, QlikTech, Teradata, and VoltDB — have also been introducing in-memory database technologies. We review how Oracle and SAP, in particular, are offering this new technology, and what this means for utilities.
Utilities are paying more and more attention to analytics and the opportunities that advanced analytics capabilities present. Yet many businesses struggle to define a clear strategy for big data analytics or how to build advanced analytics capabilities. The advancing in-memory technologies present yet another challenge for utilities to navigate but also present some irresistible opportunities.
