Scott Ellison leads IDCs analysis efforts on the mobile consumer digital marketplace including the mobile Internet; mobile content and entertainment; mobile app stores; mobile advertising; location-based services; the competitive dynamics among mobile operators, Internet-based companies, and content providers; and the rapidly evolving competitive landscape among major mobile ecosystems including Android, Apple, Blackberry, BREW, Symbian, webOS, and Windows.
A 20 year mobile industry veteran, Mr. Ellison began his mobile career in 1990 at the Personal Communications Industry Association (PCIA) in Washington, D.C. where he identified and evangelized the market opportunities offered by future 2G digital mobile services. His work there included lobbying Congress and the FCC for the 1.9 MHz spectrum re-allocation, as well as extensive work on the technical interconnection and numbering issues associated with mobile services.
In 1995 Mr. Ellison joined MCI where he negotiated local interconnection agreements associated with MCIs introduction of CLEC services, testified in regulatory and legislative proceedings, and served as MCIs local government affairs representative in the Pacific Northwest.
He later joined Destia in New York , where he headed a $10 million annual regulatory compliance program and associated compliance work leading up to Destias IPO and subsequent sale to Viatel. At Viatel Mr. Ellison headed the companys global branding and internet communications efforts and worked extensively in the companys London office.
In 2001 Mr. Ellison joined IDC where he founded three IDC analysis programs including Mobile & Wireless Entertainment, Wireless Business Network Services, and Mobile Data Services Qview.
He has won IDCs Research Quality Award twice for individually authored research, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Mobile Giving Foundation. His media quotes and appearances include BusinessWeek, CTIA, Forbes, Mobile World Congress, NBC Nightly News, The New York Times, NPR MarketWatch, Reuters TV, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal.
Mr. Ellison is based in IDCs Silicon Valley area office in San Mateo, California.
