Richard Shim is research manager for IDC's Personal Computing program. Mr. Shim provides insight and analysis on the worldwide and U.S. desktop and notebook PC industries by commercial and consumer market segments for his clients. Subscribers to the Personal Computing program vary from PC hardware manufacturers to service providers. Core documents to the program include forecast reports on PC client sub form factors, notebook by screen size and technologies embedded in PCs as well as annual studies of consumer and commercial PC buying behavior based on survey results.
Mr. Shim coordinates with PC Tracker colleagues, computing company representatives and business contacts to analyze current market dynamics and forecast industry trends. As a result, he is able to provide clients with up-to-date market intelligence published in regular reports and surveys. Mr. Shim participates on the analyst councils for leading PC vendors, including Dell, Lenovo and Panasonic, offering strategic industry and product guidance for their PC-related businesses. He also contributes to consulting and other research projects in PC-related markets within IDC.
Mr. Shim has appeared on the Today Show, CNBC Squawk Box, and CNBC Asia Pacific Squawk Box (Asia) offering perspective on PC-related news events. Mr. Shim's comments have been quoted in the following news outlets for technology-related stories: Associated Press, Bloomberg, BusinessWeek, CNET News.com, eWeek, InfoWorld, Financial Times, L.A. Prior to joining IDC, Mr. Shim was a reporter most recently with CNET Networks News.com where he wrote about personal technology and wireless networking. In 2003, he was recognized by the TJFR Group as one of the 30 most influential business journalists under the age of 30. In 2006, he was a finalist for the prestigious Gerald Loeb Award in the Online Content Category.
Mr. Shim previously followed the PC and mobile computing markets as an editor at PC Magazine and Computer Shopper.
Raised in California, Mr. Shim went to Maine for his college education and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in biology and environmental studies from Bowdoin College.
