This IDC Survey is part of a two-part series that provides the results of a U.S. study on enterprise needs and requirements for outsourced research and development/product engineering (R&D/PE) services. A total of 402 respondents were surveyed from IT, line of business (LOB), and R&D for enterprises with 500+ employees. The results highlighted in this survey focus on key areas involving drivers and inhibitors/risks of using outsourced R&D/PE services, top criteria that buyers look for in a provider of these services, and preferred solutions.
This survey also provides a summary of key findings that focus on the value proposition that providers of these services need to emphasize such as optimizing financials and investments, ensuring product quality, and providing faster time to market. The solutions that buyers prefer include incorporating customer care as part of these services and mitigating critical risks, which includes having the right geographic footprint, proven track record, and the right competencies. Finally, this survey provides an executive overview that highlights the need to step beyond requirements to ensure differentiation of client products, select the right locations for captive operations, change the financial equation, and be one of the top 5 best-in-class vendors to ensure success.
