This IDC Survey Spotlight identifies the factors that illustrate how millennial-aged midmarket CIOs and IT decision makers (ITDMs) interpret digital transformation (DX), the result of which is a cloud- and mobile-first workplace. Articulated by many IT vendors, including SAP, IBM, VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft, digitizing business processes and enabling higher levels of productivity via a specific "digital workplace" software suite are increasingly aimed at midmarket CIOs. Midmarket companies have been first-movers with cloud IT and tend to have IT budgets that can support companywide transformation. Rather than define DX, or a specific vendor tagline or set of capabilities, and ask whether a respondent's organization is aligned to that definition, the study provides answers through the lens of top 2016 IT spending priorities in order of strength and hierarchy. IDC defines midmarket as firms with 100–999 employees and millennials as executives aged 35 or younger who make up the majority of a given firm's leadership. The data presented in slide 1 is from IDC's October 2015 U.S. Midmarket ITDM Survey fielded to a total of 300 midmarket ITDMs surveyed on a variety of IT-related topics. 114 millennial respondents' responses are analyzed in this document.
