IDC has conducted a worldwide survey of enterprises to determine the attach and penetration rates for x86 servers. This study was conducted in the second calendar quarter of 2015 and covers purchases of x86 servers for the previous six months. The major findings from this study are:
- Attach rates: x86 servers in enterprise datacenters seem to have increased attach over previous years (please review Figures 1–3 to see attach trends). Vendors have been more actively marketing support and deployment services over the past five years than they have in the past.
- Servers: IDC found that non-x86 servers have higher attach and penetration rates than x86 servers. But as more non-x86 servers are removed from the market, vendors are having to offer higher-value support services on x86 systems to make up for the lost revenue.
- Cost: Average cost to support X86 systems has steadily increased at the point of sale and has declined slightly after the expiry of the initial support contract.
