This IDC study provides a preliminary top-down sizing of the software-defined compute software market in 2016 and a 2017–2021 forecast for this market. Historical and forecast revenue data is shown for the total worldwide market, and forecast revenue data is broken out by region and operating environment.
According to Gary Chen, research manager, IDC's Software-Defined Compute, "Virtual machine software continues to be a foundational technology for the modern datacenter and cloud computing, but saturation of mature markets, the embedding of virtualization into a larger stack, and changes in VMware's business model are changing the revenue outlook significantly, although shipments remain healthy. Cloud system software, the foundation for private cloud, is one area that is driving growth in the market, though private cloud has yet to find a way to really accelerate market adoption and growth. Containers are a fast-growing technology, and IDC believes it will become the base for the next generation of applications and will become a key SDC technology in the coming years."
