Abstract
This IDC Tech Buyer Survey Spotlight focuses on the importance of shared data and insights across manufacturing ecosystems. Quality, skills gaps, increased use of AI, and an Industry 4.0 platform approach to unifying the manufacturing process chain all are driving increased sharing of data and insights among ecosystem partners. Also, a key focus and reason for more open sharing of data is to ensure close and consistent engagement with customers that leads to favorable business outcomes for all ecosystem participants.
In IDC's 2023 Future of Industry Ecosystems Global Survey (n = 1,288), fielded to CXOs, business-line executives, and IT leaders across 10 industries, shared data and insights is a primary initiative in the manufacturing (discrete and process) industry as organizations try to stay on time and on budget to meet and exceed owners' expectations.
In IDC's Future of Industry Ecosystems practice, we focus on how partners work together across three key areas: shared data and insights, shared and codeveloped applications, and shared operations and expertise. Also important in our research is enabling blended physical and digital ways of delivering products and services to the end customer and collaborating with ecosystem partners such as through digital twins and industrial metaverse approaches. Each of these areas, in close concert with partners within and outside their industry, can contribute to improving the manufacturing organization's ability to be agile and innovative whether the current state is disruptive or opportunistic.
