ICT Leaders Dissect the Transformative Powers of 3rd Platform Technologies at IDC's Sixth-Annual 'South Africa CIO Summit'
25 Mar 2014
Celebrating its 50th year of delivering leadership in global IT advisory services, IDC today opened the sixth edition of its South Africa CIO Summit at The Maslow Hotel in Johannesburg. With delegates drawn from across the country's vertical spectrum, this two-day gathering represents the largest social network of CIOs, IT thought leaders, and vendors in the region, and promises to explore the pivotal role of the CIO in the new business world of technology transformation.
"The technology landscape has transformed beyond recognition in recent years, and CIOs are now faced with new types of challenges that were simply not part of the job just a few years ago," says Mark Walker, director for Insights and vertical industries at IDC Middle East, Africa, and Turkey. "Amid these growing complexities, CIOs are expected to optimize their IT infrastructures, enhance the efficiency of their operations, and align their IT strategies with the wider business aims of the organization, all while driving reductions in costs. Drawing on actionable insights from around the world, this Summit is delivering advice on harnessing the full benefits of cutting-edge technology solutions while simultaneously ensuring that a strategic focus is maintained and business expectations are met."
Mr. Vernon Turner, senior vice president for IDC's enterprise infrastructure research, got the day's proceedings underway by dissecting the developments of the last five years and analyzing the emergence of a new era of computing – the so-called '3rd Platform', which harnesses the power of Big Data, mobility, cloud, and social media. He explained how these four technology pillars are coming together in new ways to transform both the role of the CIO and key parts of the IT function, while simultaneously revolutionizing entire industries and empowering customers in new ways.
This was followed by a diverse mix of insightful presentations, real-life case studies, and informative panel discussions on everything from developing enterprise mobile strategies to driving datacenter transformation, with the analysis firmly focused on implementations of groundbreaking technology solutions that deliver proven opportunities to gain a competitive advantage.
The delegates attending this year's event represent a diverse range of industry sectors, including banking and financial services, government, oil and gas, construction and real estate, utilities, and healthcare. IDC has also enabled a more formal structure for the immense networking opportunities available at the Summit across both days.
Senior IDC analysts from across the globe are available for private one-to-one meetings throughout the course of the South Africa CIO Summit 2014, offering strategic advice on the most pressing business and technology concerns facing the region's CIOs today. Day 2 of the Summit will get underway at 08.00 tomorrow morning with discussions on the emergence of the social enterprise, the adoption of global CIO best practices, and IDC's predictions for the ICT landscape in South Africa.
