Dealing with Lower IT Budgets, Adapting IT to the Changing Business Landscape & Building Better Tools that Help Management Make Better Business Decisions Were the Top 3 IT Priorities

Singapore and Hong Kong, July 24, 2012 - According to IDC's "Continuum" End-User Survey 2012* conducted by IDC's End-User Research & Statistics Department in Asia/Pacific, 25% of the respondents indicated that dealing with lower/reduced budget was their top IT priority over the next 12 months; followed by 18% stating aligning IT to changing business landscape was their top priority; and 12% stating their top priority was building better tools that help management make better business decisions.
Respondents of the survey are all IT decision makers in the Asia/Pacific excluding Japan region, and they expected an increase in IT spending in the following IT Trends in the region: Virtualization and Automation driven needs (39%), Big Data/Analytics (34%), Mobility related (34%) and Datacenter expansion (34%). To support the IT trends growth, respondents also expected hardware related spends to form a large chunk of the IT spends.
In the space of mobility, the adoption of media tablets in organizations has increased. 22% of the respondents showed intention to procure tablets within the next 12 months as opposed to only 12% in 2011.
Respondents were asked if their organization prints documents using mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets (e.g. iPhone, BlackBerry, iPad etc). 12% of the interviewed organizations replied "yes" and of that at least one-third of the respondents stated they experienced an increase in the print volume and expected to see an increase the next year. However, it is notable that 70% of the respondents said their printing infrastructure was not designed and optimized for the unique business processes and document workflow.

About IDC's "Continuum" End-User Survey:
"Continuum" is an annual end-user survey conducted by IDC's End-User Research & Statistics Department for 12 years across key markets in Asia/Pacific. The objective of the survey is to understand and provide insights into the IT setup / IT planning environment across a broad range of technology areas from an end-user's perspective. The study targets respondents who have or exposure to their organizations' IT spending and/or insights into IT budgeting plans and priorities. The sample population was distributed across various industry verticals and company size, to ensure representations in each of these three segments:
- 13 economies: Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the PRC, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam
- 5 general vertical industry categories, comprising 20 different individual vertical industries
- 3 main company size segments - small / medium / large (which refer to companies with less than 100 / 100-499 / 500+ employees)
