Delays in Commercial Projects in 2Q12 Hurt Indonesia's PC Market, IDC reports

10 Sep 2012

Jakarta, September 10, 2012 – According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Asia/Pacific Quarterly PC tracker, the Indonesian PC market recorded a 6.5% sequential decline and 3.6% year-on-year (YoY) decline to reach 1.3 million units in 2Q12.

The fall is due largely to sluggish demand in the commercial segment, which slipped 22% sequentially. Delayed public sector projects, particularly in the education space, also contributed to the drop. Private sector enterprises, too, held back on PC purchases, choosing to wait out the ongoing exchange rate volatility.

"Indonesia’s commercial PC market suffered greatly in 2Q12, as many of the major public sector deals saw fulfillments delayed due to budget revisions. Ongoing currency fluctuation has also had a significant impact on the private sector, with enterprises delaying their PC refresh cycles until the currency becomes more stable," explained Deddie Sionader, Client Devices Market Analyst at IDC Indonesia.

Deddie adds, “Distraction from the media tablet and mobile phone markets has affected PC vendors too, as consumers' share of wallet is now increasingly getting diverted towards smart mobile devices instead of PCs. This is further evidenced by strong sales performances on media tablets and smartphones during IT events such as FKI.”

Despite the gloomy outlook for the Indonesian PC Market, vendors continue to increase their consumer product lineup; the segment posted a 5% YoY growth in Q2 2012.

Acer remained ahead of its competition, benefitting from its Olympic 2012 sponsorship and aggressive promotions to boost shipments. ASUS retained its second spot as it continued to load up channels in anticipation of the pent-up demand post Ramadhan. HP replaced Toshiba in the third spot this quarter on the back of aggressive channel loading activities.
