Microsoft Advocates "Work and Play" in Windows 8 Launch

28 Oct 2012

This IDC Event Flash portrays IDC Indonesia's initial thoughts on the impact Windows 8 will have on the Indonesian market. The analysis in this Event Flash was based on the Microsoft Windows 8 launch event held in Jakarta on October 27, 2012, as well as follow-up discussions held with partners and vendors present.

Jakarta, Oct 28, 2012 – Microsoft clearly views Indonesia as a region with significant potential for growth, as the consumption of PCs and Media Tablets within the country continue to proliferate. With the explosion of broadband and infrastructure connectivity imminent within the country, the prominence of these devices will continue to play an active role between both consumer and enterprise segments.

"It is clear that Windows 8 offers myriad potential for the end-user, however, depending on the segment of users, optimizing use of the OS is dependent on several factors such as user maturity and depth of utilization across both "touch" and "non-touch" devices before we could clearly label it a game-changer," says Sudev Bangah, IDC Indonesia Country Lead.

With heavy anticipation on the launch, much was speculated on the impact it would have on the Indonesia PC and Tablet markets.

"Windows 8 offers a vision of blending the concept of "work, play and share" across a single device. As IT literacy increases over time, IDC is cautiously optimistic that with the right information dissemination of the functionalities of Windows 8, this will eventually create a ripple in the long drawn battle between the PC and smart hand-held device markets," says Deddie Sionader, Market Analyst, IDC Indonesia.

While it is still too early to predict the impact, there are many reasons to be excited over this launch. At present the consumers remain the "winners" in this, as vendors continue to push the boundaries in offering up friendly user interfaces, accessibility and innovation as a manner to gain traction in a highly competitive market.
