IDC Provides Guidance for Thriving in the Digital Economy as New and Reinvented Competitors Disrupt Industry Leaders

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., March 18, 2015 – By 2018, one third of the top twenty market share leaders in most industries will be significantly disrupted by new competitors (and "reinvented" incumbents) that use the 3rd Platform to create new services and business models. Aside from rapid technological change, businesses will have to cope with geopolitical, economic, and environmental disruptions—some predictable, but many not. To help companies weather such disruptions effectively, International Data Corporation (IDC) has published a new report, IDC MaturityScape: Digital Transformation (DX) (Doc #254721). Digital Transformation (DX) will drive changes in enterprise business models and ecosystems by leveraging digital competencies. IDC's MaturityScape Digital Transformation (DX) Stage Overview
Business leaders are challenged to move their enterprises to the next level, that of digital business transformation, employing digital technologies coupled with organizational, operational, and business model innovation to create new ways of operating and growing businesses.
IDC has developed the DX MaturityScape to help business and IT leaders understand and cope with the challenges and opportunities that DX will bring. The new research provides a framework for developing coherent, forward-looking strategies and plans that optimize the ability of leadership to digitally transform business practices including customer experience, information management, operating models and workforce management. It builds on IDC's research on the business-enhancing attributes of the 3rd Platform, which incorporates mobility, social business, cloud computing, and big data and analytics (BDA). This study:
- Describes the framework of the Digital Transformation MaturityScape in terms of how a set of business disciplines can be transformed by adopting increasingly mature capabilities — from the relatively incoherent ad hoc phase to the aspirational level of an optimized maturity level.
- Provides guidance on how business leaders can identify where they need to mature their DX competencies by identifying some of the challenges and achievements for a range of characteristic management disciplines at each stage of maturity.
This new study also serves as a guide for business and technology executives to identify areas in need of improvement in support of DX in five key dimensions:
- Leadership DX - requires that leaders become more sophisticated in their knowledge of the enterprise ecosystem. This includes the digital accessibility of markets, customers, and service providers, in order to anticipate and develop product and operational innovations that extend market share and increase revenue by creating shared digital experiences.
- Omni-Experience DX - the ability to continually attract and grow loyalty with customers, partners, and employees by creating interactive experiences.
- WorkSource DX - the transformation of the way enterprises access, connect, and leverage talent through the use of digital technologies.
- Operating Model DX - describes the ability to make business operations more responsive and effective by leveraging digitally connected products/services, assets, people and trading partners.
- Information DX - the ability to leverage information for competitive advantage by enabling the business to respond to opportunities swiftly and with superior intelligence.
This DX MaturityScape outlines the stages of maturity that a business must achieve in each of those five dimensions. IDC MaturityScape reports on the five dimensions will publish at the beginning of May 2015.
