New IDC MaturityScape provides guidance for leveraging and managing information
Framingham, MA – June 8, 2015 – Information is at the core of the new digital ecosystem. IDC estimates that by 2020, the digital universe will reach 44 trillion gigabytes, a tenfold increase over 2013. And while there has been a dramatic increase in the ability of key players to unlock value from information, most companies are still at the beginning of their journey to extract value from information.
This is a transformation; for most players, a difficult, multistaged journey is needed to adapt current organizational processes, culture, and skills to the requirement of the new digital ecosystem. To help organizations successfully weather and capitalize on this transformation, International Data Corporation (IDC) has developed the IDC MaturityScape: Information Digital Transformation (Document # 255774). Information Digital Transformation (DX) is a framework for identifying the stages, critical measures, outcomes, and actions required for IT organizations to effectively evolve to information transformation as a critical enabler of the digital transformation of their enterprise.

IDC's Information Digital Transformation MaturityScape consists of five stages: ad hoc, opportunistic, repeatable, managed, and optimized. With this document, an organization can use a comprehensive set of objective criteria to benchmark its maturity against an industry benchmark — in the quest to achieve facts-based and data-driven decision making and derive desired outcomes based on business-oriented organizational goals. Specifically, this study will help business and technology executives identify areas in need of enhancement in support of DX in five key areas or disciplines of information transformation including:
- Data Discovery
- Value Development
- Value Realization
- Knowledge and Collaboration
- Information Architecture
According to the report, information transformation is a huge and critical challenge for most organizations. With the 3rd Platform delivering unlimited computing capabilities and unlimited avenues to access information and knowledge, information itself becomes even more valuable. Organizations that evolve from a classic data management approach to mastering a differentiated information value chain will gain business leadership and competitive advantage.
“Leaders in information transformation will need to treat data and information as they would any existing asset, invest in a range of technology and people to distill insight into monetary value, and invest in the establishment of organizational competencies focused on leveraging data,” says Serge Findling, vice president of research with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "IDC's Information Digital Transformation MaturityScape offers senior leaders a framework to assess their enterprise challenges and create a sound information transformation strategy."
IDC's information Digital Transformation MaturityScape is part of a new series of Digital Transformation (DX) MaturityScapes, across five key dimensions: Leadership DX, Omni-Experience DX, WorkSource DX, Operating Model DX, and Information DX. To learn more, please visit http://bit.ly/1AwAYyg.
