Virtualization and Storage Combined: The Key to a Reliable and Automated "Virtualized" Datacenter

Analyst Photo "Blu-Ray Disc, has won the next generation optical format war over HD DVD. This is good news for its supporters and will help the industry to move beyond the commoditized DVD drive business. However, this will not be enough to reignite the soft optical disc drive (ODD) market quickly. Strong competition remains from much more affordable DVD burners, video distribution over the Internet, and much higher capacity external hard disk drives. Nonetheless, IDC believes Blu-ray drives will follow an adoption curve similar to that of DVDs in the late 1990's, and become a mass-market product in 2009." - Wolfgang Schlichting, Research Director, Removable Storage at IDC.

Marked Motivation Shift is Behind Corporate Investments in Information Management for Compliance

The 2007 Information Management for Compliance Survey, conducted by IDC and ARMA International, reveals a marked shift in the motivations behind corporate investments in records management and information initiatives, although compliance with regulatory requirements and the mitigation of litigation liabilities remain the primary motivation. The survey data and discussions with end users point to the following trends:
  • A rising proportion of corporations are looking to put in place an information governance regime.
  • Regulatory drivers have extended beyond Sarbanes-Oxley compliance to support broader state and local data retention requirements.
  • Firms are starting to adopt policies for disposition of nonrecords and convenience copies.
  • Corporate erecords management programs are immature relative to physical records management efforts.

Technology Spending Priorities
In the 2007 survey, the top 5 priorities were as follows:

  • Records management applications
  • Document management/imaging applications
  • Email and IM archiving
  • Data retention policy definition, workflow, and tracking tools
  • Search and discovery applications
More About Key Priorities and Investment Drivers
To identify more key priorities and investment drivers, challenges, and isolated trends related to records management and information retention practices, read IDC's survey Highlights from the 2007 Information Management for Compliance Survey (Doc # 211216).

Storage Support Services Market to Pass the $10 Billion Mark, Driven by Increasing Data Storage Requirements

The storage support services market will expand from $9 billion in 2006 to just over $10 billion in 2011, representing a CAGR of 2.3%. IDC expects this expansion to be driven by the growth in the disk storage systems.

Key Findings

  • The trend toward lower cost storage systems is expected to slow, but not stop the need for support services.
  • Disk support services are expected to grow at a five-year CAGR of 3.0%, while tape support services are expected to contract at a five-year CAGR of -1.8%.

IDC's Recommendations to Vendors
Vendors that wish to participate in the storage support services market need to focus on services beyond just break/fix. As enterprises continue to store more data, there will be a need for services that help these enterprises optimize their storage systems, so important data can be retrieved when it is needed.

Learn About Top Market Storage Support Players
To complete the study, Worldwide Storage Support Services 2007–2011 Forecast and Competitive Analysis (Doc # 210044), IDC surveyed four top storage hardware player including Dell, HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems. These companies shared information regarding their storage support offerings, operations and future strategic plans.

Long-term Outlook for Total Worldwide R-HDD Market Finds Shipment and Revenue Growth of More Than 50%

IDC released the industry's first market size and forecast for the worldwide removable hard disk drive (R-HDD) market, revealing that the opportunity looks bright for R-HDD adoption. Worldwide shipments will increase at a 65% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), totaling over 3 million R-HDD solutions and additional disk cartridges in 2012. Meanwhile, total worldwide R-HDD revenue will grow equally as strong with a 52% CAGR.

Key Trends

  • The current R-HDD solutions are increasingly based on standardized products that allow for data sharing and interchange.
  • The majority of the R-HDD solutions will be used for direct-attached server and host-based backup and recovery functions, impacting the low-end tape drives negatively.
  • The challenge for large, tape-centric OEMs will be transitioning customers to R-HDDs while managing their large, profitable tape portfolios.

Gain Guidance and Learn More
To gain guidance and understand key opportunities and challenges of the fast growing R-HDD market, read IDC's study Worldwide Removable Hard Disk Drive 2008–2012 Forecast and Analysis: The Quest for a Viable Tape Replacement (Doc # 210169).

Virtualization and Storage Combined: The Key to a Reliable and Automated "Virtualized" Datacenter

Server virtualization is reshaping overall IT priorities, and it has the potential to disrupt many existing storage practices. Indeed, major server and storage virtualization technologies (e.g., block/file virtualization, space-efficient data replication, and deduplication) will affect organizations' SAN infrastructure, data protection, disaster recovery, and data retention practices.

Key Drivers Bringing Server and Storage Virtualization Technologies Together

  • Virtual server “sprawl” and server mobility for disaster recovery are driving the need for the rapid provisioning and replication capabilities found in block-level virtualized storage.
  • Efficient storage and protection of growing volumes of replicated and unstructured data are driving the need for file-level virtualization and data deduplication solutions.

Why Combine Them
Individually, server and storage virtualization technologies can help IT departments solve many current problems. Combined, however, they can speed responsiveness to business requirements while reducing long-term hardware costs, system complexity, and administrative overhead.

More on the Best Strategies to Set up a Reliable Virtual Datacenter
With all the different products and technologies appearing on the market, the real challenge is understanding how virtualization and storage technologies affect existing IT practices. IDC presentation, Virtualization and Storage: A 360-Degree Strategy for Building a Virtual Datacenter (Doc # 210084), provides IT and storage managers with guidance on the best strategies for avoiding potential problems and setting up a highly reliable and automated "virtualized" datacenter.
