Storage touches every aspect of our businesses, as well as our personal lives. Our digital universe continues to grow at phenomenal rates, and quite frankly, we are having a tough time keeping up with it. Storage hardware and software are at the center of enterprise IT discussions around consolidation, efficiency, power and cooling, backup/archive, security, virtualization, and information management – just to name a few. And on the personal side? Today, there are more terabytes being shipped into personal storage than into enterprise storage, and everyday consumers are having loads of issues just managing and protecting their digital assets.  Finally, with solid state drives all the rage, there are implications to the semiconductor industry, not to mention the future transitions to faster networking protocols like Infiniband and beyond. There's never been a better time to be involved in the storage industry than today." - David Reinsel, Group Vice President, Storage and Semiconductor Research at IDC.

Network Storage Comes Home, Not Without Some Difficulty
Even in 2012, about 80 percent of external drives will lack network capabilities, predicts Wolfgang Schlichting, a research director at IDC. “Clearly, we are not there yet for mainstream consumers to feel comfortable or even be able to hook up and take advantage of these devices,” he said.

Power & Cooling Costs Top $1B Mark
“Here’s the crux of the matter -- data center storage requirements are growing at about 55 percent a year, while hard disk drive capacities are growing at 30 to 35 percent a year,” explains IDC analyst David Reinsel, who wrote the research report. “This means that we’re putting an abundance of drives into the data center; we’re having to do a lot more work to cool them down.”

Strong demand for drives propels storage revenue
The growth in disk-based storage revenue was healthy despite the slow growth in server shipments, Nisbet said. The growth will continue to be healthy through 2008 as more data is generated, said Brad Nisbet, research manager at IDC. "Customers are making a statement that even in these times of cautious spending, they really need to invest in devices that store business data," Nisbet said.

New Dell Equallogic Solutions simplify storage
According to IDC, shipments of iSCSI-based storage solutions will increase (worldwide) 138 percent annually over the next five years.1 “This is twice the growth we’re seeing in the worldwide disk storage systems market,” said Benjamin Woo, vice president, Enterprise Storage Systems at IDC.  “Customers are turning to iSCSI as an easier way to integrate and manage their datacenter environments.  With its investment in EqualLogic and the expansion of its overall storage portfolio, Dell is clearly positioning itself to go after this trend.”

Hitachi introduces two new hard disk drives for advanced home theater systems designers
“The digital video recorder market continues to experience robust growth. Shipments of disk drives for personal video recording applications are expected to grow at a 2007-2012 CAGR of 14%,” according to John Rydning, Research Director for hard disk drives at IDC. “As well, consumers are seeking more hours of video recording capacity as they increasingly switch to high-definition content. Hitachi's new CinemaStar disk drives hit the mark for delivering higher recording storage capacities while enabling cool, quiet, and low-power PVR operation.”
