EU Expansion: Understanding the Impact on IT Markets

IDC delivers essential guidance for doing business in the accession countries

In 2004, the European Union welcomes ten new member states. As borders open and trade restritions vanish, the impact on IT markets in Central and Eastern Europe will be manifold:

  • total IT spending will grow by 10% annually*
  • EU-supported eGovernment initiatives will reshape the public sector
  • competition will intensify, forcing companies to leverage IT to gain advantage
  • EU development funds will free national resources for further IT investment
  • foreign direct investment will increase and facilitate IT investment
  • small and medium-sized businesses will be transformed
  • combined GDP will reach $400 billion

* Through 2007. By contrast, total IT spending in the current EU is expected to grow by less than 5% annually.

The EU's key role in policy support for public sector reform and its investments in IT will increase as the economies and infrastructures of the new member states are further developed.
