Data Protection-SMB Opportunity

IDC is pleased to announce the availability of an important research study entitled, Data Protection in United States SMBs: Opportunity and Analysis.

Research Overview

The days when small and medium businesses (SMBs) were just burning DVDs from time to time to protect their data are over. Today’s SMBs are more IT savvy than 10 years ago, and many of them are concerned as much as large enterprises about protecting their data in an organized and comprehensive way. As a result, SMBs are increasingly adopting technologies like replication or disk-to-disk-to-tape backup, previously seen only in enterprise datacenters. Of course SMBs are not ready to adopt enterprise-scale products that might be too complicated and expensive and over-deliver. They look for solutions appropriate to their needs, which won’t require significant financial and human resources to acquire, deploy and manage.

Because of the growing SMB need for more advanced tools and solutions, IDC embarked on a study to investigate in more detail the current and planned data protection environments for firms of different sizes. The study’s results are compiled in IDC’s special report presentation, Data Protection in United States SMBs: Opportunity and Analysis ( Doc #216400).

Key Findings

  • The majority of SMBs have several methods of data protection in place, with the number of methods increasing as the size of the firm increases. Backup to tape/removable media and disk are the leading methods, but replication is quickly gaining traction among SMBs.
  • Online data protection services are being adopted, but cautiously.
  • When selecting a data protection solution, small businesses are especially concerned about ease of use given their limited IT support resources, and medium businesses care more about product functionality and seamless integration than about pricing and brand.
  • Online backup, remote replication, and CDP are the top three methods small businesses are interested to implement, while for medium sized firms, the biggest potential gainers include remote replication and CDP, as well as VTL and online replication.
