While a slow prolonged economic recovery is forecast, customers will look to service providers for greater efficiencies and performance optimization of hosted solutions. According to Rona Shuchat, director of Application Outsourcing Services, "IDC expects that hosted application management (hosted AM) spending will regain its traction more quickly than other project-based spending initiatives, as opex hosting will be considered an attractive alternative to capex spending. Smaller midtier enterprises will increasingly have the ability to procure lower-cost prebuilt hosted dedicated packaged solutions as the volume of accelerators creates more options to choose from, particularly as large-scale ISVs look to expand beyond their core base of licensed large enterprise customers."

IDC's Worldwide Services Taxonomy, 2010

This IDC study provides a detailed description of IDC's services market taxonomy. For 2010, the taxonomy includes individual foundation markets grouped within three macromarket segments: project based, outsourcing, and support and training. At the worldwide level, spending is also segmented across three geographic macroregions: Americas; Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA); and Asia/Pacific. These macroregions are further segmented at the regional and local levels. IDC's services market taxonomy is the basis for IDC services research studies, trackers, and forecasters worldwide, as well as the relational multidimensional schema of IDC's Services Market Forecaster database that feeds worldwide and regional vendor trackers. "IDC's services taxonomy presents a comprehensive and standardized view of the worldwide services marketplace," said Gard Little, research manager, Global Services Markets and Trends. "It continues to be the premier source for defining and categorizing external IT and business services."

Worldwide and U.S. Application Management Services 2010–2014 Forecast

This IDC study presents forecasts for the worldwide and U.S. application management (AM) services markets for 2010–2014. While discrete global AM services spending showed an estimated negative growth rate of -0.7% in 2009, at $40.6 billion, a very slow gradual recovery is forecast through the next few years. IDC estimates that at a global level, AM services will grow 3.5% in 2010. While all regions are forecast to show a gradual recovery, the Americas and APAC are estimated to recover sooner than western Europe, which shows the slowest projected growth in 2010, at 1.2%. According to Rona Shuchat, director of Application Outsourcing, "IDC expects that AM contract renewal rates will be stronger in 2010, with consolidation and continued optimization driving the value proposition of many deals. Clients will continue to welcome shorter-term, quick-embedded ROI projects with very defined boundaries of completion. While cautionary prudence will drive many AM negotiations, companies will be looking for ways to innovate and transform while they drive greater operational efficiencies."

Policy Is the Best Policy: Ten Software Licensing Policies Every ISV Should Consider

This IDC study makes the case for developing licensing policy for customer situations that are typically handled on a one-off custom basis. Ten software licensing policies are identified that many ISVs handle via custom agreements. "IDC is observing increased proactiveness and transparency in the communication of licensing policy as a means of competitive differentiation," said Amy Konary, director of Software Pricing and Licensing at IDC. "In addition, licensing communications is becoming an important tool for vendors to help customers understand policy and the rationale behind it, as well as to challenge competitors to match customer-friendly policies."

Worldwide Packaged Software Spending Forecast (March 16, 2010)

The Worldwide Black Book (IDC #221793) is IDC's quarterly analysis of the status and projected growth of the worldwide ITC industry in 54 countries.
