Many companies say that they value “work-life balance,” but few actually translate their words into actions. At IDC, I can truly say that this is at the core of the company and its culture. It’s an amazing thing to work for a company that is extremely receptive to this important aspect of life.If you had to describe IDC in three words, which would you choose?
Dedicated, People-oriented, and Dynamic

A great set of colleagues with varied backgrounds, each being highly supportive and inspiring. What is your favorite part of your job?
The perfect mix of autonomy and teamwork. It’s rare to have such an opportunity at any other job.
Suya Xiong Senior Research Analyst
Working at IDC was an easy choice for me. I was a summer intern with IDC’s IT Executive Program in 2014. I knew at that time that this was the company I wanted to work for after graduation. I love technology, problem solving, and being creative. It is wonderful to be at the intersection of all of these and work with so many smart and experienced people. What do you enjoy most about working at IDC?
The work environment is outstanding. It is a workplace with high integrity. At the same time, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere encourages me to learn from people both in my team and outside my team. Each day brings new insights.
Eric Newmark Vice President, Life Sciences and Industry Cloud
I am an entrepreneur at heart, and unlike many companies that dictate a narrow path for employees to follow, IDC both encourages and rewards out-of-the-box thinking and entrepreneurism as a key attribute of analyst success. What qualities do you think it takes to be successful at IDC?
People that succeed at IDC are highly self-motivated, well organized, out-of-the-box thinkers, who appreciate teamwork, have an innate love for technology, and are not afraid to wear several different business 'hats' simultaneously.
Hayley Sutherland Project Manager
I love that it’s such an academic environment – an important part of job satisfaction for me is always being able to both learn and teach, and I feel like my colleagues are always looking to share ideas! How would you describe IDC's culture?
Whether it’s the Christmas bonus brunch, summer Fridays, or the amazing learning opportunities, IDC is great at making its employees feel appreciated and valued.
Shawn McCarthy Research Director
I had a speaking opportunity a few years ago to a government group in Brasilia, the Capital of Brazil. The way my flight
was booked, I had to change planes in Manaus, a city known as “The Heart of the Amazon” that’s located
right in the middle of the rain forest. When I found out that I’d be passing through there, I immediately arranged
to take a couple of vacation days. So instead of changing planes immediately, I used the vacation time to book a boat trip
that went several miles up the Amazon river, and had one of the best sidetrips I’ve ever taken during a business trip.
That’s one of the nice things about working at IDC. We have to travel quite often, but flexible scheduling, generous vacation time, and the ability to leverage business travel in creative ways can make a trip more exciting and personally enjoyable.
Kim Schuberthan Director of Client Service
There are many great things about working at IDC. First and foremost is the ability to learn something new. With the world of technology constantly changing, every day is a learning experience. I feel extremely fortunate to work with amazing people, both colleagues and IDC clients as well. What is your favorite part of your job?
In this role, there are no two days that are exactly the same. Each day I am faced with a new challenge or opportunity to learn and grow from. That is the favorite part of my job, in addition to the wonderful clients and colleagues that I work with each day!
John St. Martin VP Finance
My success at IDC has been greatly enhanced by my energetic and knowledgeable Finance team as well as having a supervisor who coaches with a “let’s try it” attitude. What's been the biggest surprise about working at IDC?
My biggest surprise about IDC is that there are so many long term employees with over 15 years of service. In today’s business environment that is an incredible statistic. It obviously shows that IDC is a remarkable company which continuously offers amazing opportunities for its employees.
Robert Eastman Research Manager, IDC Retail Insights at IDC
IDC’s culture is entrepreneurial and results-oriented, in that you have services that you are responsible for building and delivering to. In a larger sense, IDC is a fun place to work, with a lot of peer and team support, and many corporate services, such as training, that ensure that you continue to grow in your career. I have been very impressed with the training sessions I have taken, and plan on taking more advantage of these. I see a culture of fairness and respect with how employees are treated, which lets each employee focus on doing what we do best. I also like the communication up and down the organization so that employees feel valued and informed. What is your favorite part of your job?
I enjoy being able to get up every day and tackle a new research challenge – researching, discovering, analyzing and writing about the new or unique insights that my clients need to be thinking about. The fact that you can do this any time of the day or night, wherever you are, just makes this job all the more exciting and satisfying.

Entrepreneurial, Imaginative, StimulatingWhat has helped make you successful at IDC?
IDC offers many opportunities for career development. I was lucky enough to be selected for the Mentor Program during my first year of employment. IDC matches you up with someone in a different department, which is a great way to learn about other aspects of the IDC business that you may not be aware of. I was lucky enough to be partnered with a wonderful mentor, and she continues to be a key part of my daily life at IDC, for guidance and as a sounding board for new ideas, even after 10+ years.

Presenting at Directions. It's a lot more than just going up on stage and talking through 15 – 20 slides in 35 minutes. The preparation, rehearsal, and delivery all take on a life of their own the closer we get to Directions, and everything gets magnified 100x when you're on the main stage. I'll say this much though: it's also one of the most thrilling experiences I've had.If you had to describe IDC in three words, which would you choose?
I'm going to go with three phrases:
Forward-thinking, Sound expertise, Insightful analysis.
