IDC Canada Evaluates Canadian Cloud IaaS Service Providers in New IDC MarketScape

February 18, 2015 - International Data Corporation (IDC) Canada announced today the availability of a new IDC MarketScape report profiling the leading vendors in the Canadian IaaS cloud computing market. IDC MarketScape: Canadian Public IaaS 2015 Vendor Assessment (IDC# CA1SSC15), is the third IDC MarketScape in a series covering the infrastructure-based cloud computing market in Canada, and is a continuation of what has become an extensive and broad base of IDC Canada research on the topic. Previous reports on this marketplace include:

  • IDC MarketScape: Canadian Public IaaS 2013 Vendor Analysis (CA3SSC13)
  • IDC MarketScape: Canadian Dedicated Private Infrastructure as a Service 2014 Vendor Assessment (CA1SSC14)

The report assesses twelve of the largest Canadian public infrastructure-based cloud service providers, and offers valuable guidance when examining IaaS solutions providers, and planning future strategic investment opportunities. Through in-depth interviews with these providers and feedback from each provider's customers, IDC Canada reports that:

  • Amazon Web Services, IBM, and Microsoft - earned the distinction of placing in the Leaders category, an increase from only one firm in the 2013 version of the study.
  • Eight vendors are closely grouped within the Major Players category. IDC Canada believes that scale, channel strategy, and ability to deliver hybrid computing will differentiate vendors in this heavily competitive space.
  • Buyer preferences have shifted to focus more on security and quality of service, and less on the need for vendors to provide end-to-end IT services beyond just Public IaaS.
"Offerings are now becoming less expensive while much more robust and automated to enable self-serve features," says Mark Schrutt, Research Vice President, Services and Enterprise Applications at IDC Canada. "Providers are picking up on the hybrid message and designing their solutions with interoperability and hybrid management in mind. Partners also have more skin in the game to bridge gaps in offerings and as a channel to the market, which contributes to the increase in the amount of vendors in the Major Players category."
