PRESS RELEASE

New IDC MarketScape Identifies Leading Canadian Managed Security Service Providers

- TORONTO, July 16, 2015 -

International Data Corporation (IDC) Canada announced today the results of a new IDC MarketScape research report that comprehensively covers the 12 most prominent Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) in the Canadian market. IDC MarketScape: Canadian Managed Security Services 2015 Vendor Assessment (IDC Doc# CA1SD15), is the first Canadian IDC MarketScape on the topic, highlighting the evolution within the managed security services space while offering valuable guidance for organizations examining domestic security solutions providers and planning future strategic investment opportunities.

Using a rigorous scoring methodology that produces a definitive assessment of each vendor's current market capabilities and strategies for competing in the future, and through in-depth interviews with each provider and its customers, IDC Canada concluded that all the identified providers offer a comprehensive portfolio for managed security services.

Highlights from the report include the following:

  • IDC grouped four organizations in the Market Leaders category and eight in the Major Players classification. TELUS, IBM, CGI and Bell earned the distinction of placing in the Leaders category.
  • IDC placed another group of providers, Dell, HG, IPS, Above Security, eSentire, Allstream, Wipro and Scalar in the Major Players category.
  • The number one reason customers say they engage an MSSP is that they do not have the in-house skills or resources to effectively manage and monitor the vast security threat environment across their own array of system vulnerabilities.
  • Buyer preferences have shifted to focus more on security and quality of service, and less on the need for vendors to provide end-to-end IT services beyond just public IaaS.
  • The underlying buying criteria for businesses are responsiveness, ease of use and cost. Price, is typically in the top three or four decision criteria.

"Managed security services continue to gain momentum in Canada, and is expected to be the strongest performing security market over the next 5 years" says Kevin Lonergan, Analyst for Infrastructure Solutions at IDC Canada.

"The MSSPs operating in Canada can all provide managed security services, but what differentiates them is their value-add services and investments in next-generation technologies such as big data threat analytics and cloud identity management. The diverse MSSP landscape spanning Telcos, consulting firms, and pure play providers insure that Canadian organizations can find a provider that meets their specific needs and budgetary requirements."

The IDC MarketScape: Canadian Managed Security Services 2015 Vendor Assessment report assesses 12 managed security service providers who meet the criteria of operating a security operations centre (SOC) in Canada, offer a security information and event management (SEIEM) solution, and have a Canadian customer base.
