VENDORS VIE FOR FIRST MOVER ADVANTAGE IN THE CANADIAN MEDIA TABLET MARKET

IDC Canada Examines Competitive Strategies of Current and Expected Tablet Vendors in Canada

- Nov 8, 2010 -

NEWS FACTS

International Data Corporation (IDC) Canada has released a new study, that analyzes current and potential vendor offerings in the media tablet market. The study, "The Media Tablet War: Examining Competitive Strategies of Current and Expected Vendors in Canada" (IDC# CA8CD10), includes Apple as well as other vendors that are likely to announce offerings in this market.

  • Media tablets are not a fad and here to stay; software and services vendors such as SAP and IBM are looking at how the value of their products and services can be extended by media tablets, while hardware vendors and others are considering how to better position their products in the market given that media tablets will, to some extent, cannibalize markets including netbooks and ereaders.
  • While the media tablet market is mainly a consumer play today, a surprising number of businesses have adopted these devices in the C-suite, and with workers in the field, and these devices have spanned a number of industries ranging from healthcare to energy. As these devices promise to extend worker productivity, the market will start to see models designed specifically with productivity and business functionality in mind.
  • In a nascent but fast-growing market that is expected to see over 500,000 devices shipped in Canada by the end of 2010, and is expected to grow in the triple digits in 2011, vendors won't have to "kill" the iPad to succeed, but they do need a clear target market and must deliver an exceptional experience when it comes to hardware, software UI, and content.

    • Given that Apple is responsible for creating an entirely new product category, it has largely been the only media tablet provider in town in 2Q10 and 3Q10, however that will soon change.
    • We can expect to see more product announcements in late 2010 once Android OS 3.0 is available, with the remaining influx occurring in 2011 after the expected announcement of Android 3.5 and mobile-based events like Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and Mobile World Congress, where many product announcements are expected to occur to round out the competition.

The study reviews vendor strategies, strengths, and possible challenges as well as business and consumer adoption rates and expectations. Possible outside factors that could impact vendor performance and strategy is also examined. This report is produced in conjunction with IDC Canada's Media Tablet Market Measurement and Forecast Data Research. Vendors covered in this study include: Apple, Cisco, Avaya, Samsung, Toshiba, RIM, HP, ASUS, LG, Acer, Lenovo, MSI, Microsoft, Google, Nokia, Sony , Motorola.
